Lighting is typically the largest controllable electrical load in a commercial building, and the easiest to cut without anyone noticing.
Commercial energy codes have steadily tightened the requirements around lighting control. Automatic shutoff, occupancy-based control in most space types, daylight-responsive dimming in daylit zones, and receptacle control are now baseline expectations in most jurisdictions rather than optional efficiency measures. Meeting them requires a designed control system, not switches.
Networked lighting control puts every fixture, sensor, and switch on a common control network. That changes what is possible: zones can be redrawn in software when a tenant reconfigures a floor, schedules can be adjusted per area, and the system can report actual energy consumption by zone rather than leaving you to estimate.
The sensing layer does the real work. Occupancy sensors in enclosed spaces, vacancy sensors where code requires manual-on, and photosensors in daylit zones handle the majority of savings automatically. The programming detail that matters is tuning — time delays and sensitivity set so the system saves energy without ever leaving someone standing in the dark, which is the failure mode that gets a control system disabled by facilities within a month.
On the infrastructure side, DALI-2 remains the workhorse for addressable fixture-level control, while PoE lighting — powering and controlling luminaires over standard network cable — has matured into a credible option for new commercial construction, particularly where the building already has dense structured cabling and wants lighting data on the same platform as everything else.
