Sound Masking & Acoustic Privacy

The complaint is never “it is too loud in here.” It is “I can hear every word of that call.”

Sound masking raises the ambient noise floor with an engineered, broadband sound that is specifically shaped to cover the frequency range of human speech. It does not cancel noise and it is not white noise — it is a tuned spectrum that makes conversations at a distance unintelligible rather than inaudible.

The effect is counterintuitive until you experience it. Adding sound to a room makes it feel quieter, because distraction comes from intelligible speech rather than from sound level. Once a conversation two desks away stops resolving into words, it stops competing for attention. Open offices become workable, and so do the eight-hour days people spend in them.

Speech privacy is the other half. In private offices, HR spaces, executive suites, and any medical setting with patient confidentiality obligations, masking raises the effort required to overhear a conversation from a neighboring room or a corridor. For healthcare environments with HIPAA obligations, it is a practical and commonly deployed control for the acoustic privacy problem that wall construction alone rarely solves.

Getting it right requires tuning to the actual finished space. Emitter spacing, output level, and spectrum have to be measured and adjusted after furniture, ceiling, and finishes are in — a system commissioned from a spec sheet will be audible and irritating rather than unnoticed. Correctly tuned, occupants should be entirely unaware the system exists until the day it is switched off. One requirement is absolute: masking must mute on fire alarm activation so it never interferes with notification audibility, and where systems share infrastructure with life safety, listed equipment and correct signal priority are mandatory under NFPA 72.
