A great theater is mostly a room problem. The equipment is the easy part.
The difference between a good home theater and an expensive one is almost entirely room design. Speaker placement relative to seating, screen size relative to viewing distance, first-reflection treatment, bass management, and light control determine what you experience. Equipment selection matters, but it matters less than any of those.
We start with the room: seating rows and eye height, screen size driven by viewing distance and content aspect ratio, and the acoustic treatment plan. Riser construction, soffit detailing for speaker placement, and full light control from blackout shades all get designed before anything is purchased.
Immersive formats add height channels, which put real constraints on ceiling construction and speaker placement. This is the kind of decision that must be made before drywall — retrofitting overhead channels into a finished ceiling is expensive and often compromised. It is the strongest argument for bringing us in during framing.
Media rooms follow different rules. A multi-purpose space that also hosts football, gaming, and homework needs a bright large-format display rather than projection, speakers that stay invisible, and lighting that works for reading as well as watching. Same engineering, different answers.
Control ties it together. One button should dim the lights, drop the shades, lower the screen, power the projector, select the source, and set the volume. If watching a movie requires three remotes and a decision, the room will not get used.
